For internationally qualified doctors, UAE licensing turns on one question: which title are you applying for?
A physician with an MBBS, one with an MD in internal medicine, and one holding a recognised Western board certification follow three different pathways. Some sit a computer-based paper, some an oral assessment, some are assessed on file with no exam. Applying under the wrong title is the costliest error in doctor licensing, and it surfaces weeks after the fees are paid.
This guide covers the Prometric exam for doctors across the UAE authorities: eligibility, verification, the assessment, preparation and post-exam licensing. Prometric Guide is part of Alzantra International, whose licensing team also assists healthcare professionals with complete UAE licensing processing across the relevant health authorities.
Doctors applying for UAE healthcare licensing first need the correct professional title and authority. DHA and MOHAP use Prometric for many physician assessments, while DOH Abu Dhabi uses Pearson VUE through TAMM. GP, Specialist and Consultant routes differ by qualification, experience and recognition under the relevant Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR). After eligibility and DataFlow verification, candidates who require an exam prepare to the blueprint for their approved title and complete licensing after passing.
Prometric Exam for Doctors in UAE: Quick Answer
Prometric Exam for Doctors in UAE: What the Assessment Looks Like
The medical licensing exam UAE authorities use is a computer-based assessment delivered on their behalf by a testing provider, which supplies the seats, software and invigilation. The content, eligibility rules, pass mark and licensing decision belong entirely to the health authority.
What the paper looks like for physicians:
Computer-based multiple choice, single best answer.
Typically 150 questions over two and a half to three hours.
Scenario-based clinical vignettes asking for the single best next step.
No negative marking, so a blank scores the same as a wrong answer.
Results reported as Pass or Fail, generally without a numerical score.
The word "scenario" is the important one. These are not recall questions. A physician paper gives a presentation, a set of findings and a decision point, rewarding clinical reasoning over memorised facts. That should shape your preparation.
Not every doctor sits a written paper. Senior physicians with recognised board certifications may be assessed by oral assessment or on file. Alzantra can confirm which route applies to your title before you commit to a study plan or a fee.
UAE Doctor Licensing Authorities: DHA, DOH, MOHAP and SHA
The UAE licenses doctors by emirate, not nationally. A licence from one authority does not authorise practice under another.
Authority | Coverage | Exam Provider | Portal |
DHA | Dubai | Prometric | Sheryan |
DOH | Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Al Dhafra | Pearson VUE | TAMM |
MOHAP | Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah | Prometric | MOHAP eServices |
SHA | Sharjah | Prometric / authority-specific as applicable | SHA portal |
DHA, for Dubai. Applications run through the Sheryan portal, starting with a self-assessment that tells you which title you qualify for and whether a CBT is required. The exam is delivered by Prometric. See our DHA exam guide and the physician pathway in our DHA exam for doctors guide.
DOH, for Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. The exception worth knowing: DOH exams are delivered by Pearson VUE, not Prometric, with scheduling unlocked through TAMM after DOH approves your application and you pay the pre-booking fee. Physicians targeting Abu Dhabi frequently waste weeks searching Prometric for a slot that does not exist.
MOHAP, for the Northern Emirates. Still widely called MOH, covering Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah, with Sharjah historically included. Sharjah now has its own authority, the SHA, so confirm which regulator licenses your target employer. The exam is delivered by Prometric. See our MOHAP exam guide.
Doctors often apply to whichever authority a recruiter mentions first, which is rarely the one that fits their plan. Alzantra maps physician profiles against each authority's requirements so you commit to the right route. Our UAE licensing roadmap compares them side by side.
UAE Doctor Licensing Eligibility: GP, Specialist and Consultant
Every authority publishes a Professional Qualification Requirements document, the PQR, setting out title by title what it will accept. For physicians the titles that matter are General Practitioner, Specialist and Consultant, and the gap between them is significant.
General Practitioner requires a recognised primary medical qualification plus a completed internship, with around two years of post-internship clinical experience.
Specialist requires an additional recognised postgraduate qualification in the declared specialty, plus experience in it. The qualification must appear on the authority's recognised list, and this is where many applications fail. A postgraduate degree respected in your home country is not automatically recognised for a UAE specialist title.
Consultant requires a higher threshold again, typically a recognised specialist qualification plus several years of post-specialisation practice.
The recurring error is applying under a specialist title on the strength of departmental experience. Working in cardiology does not make you a specialist in cardiology for licensing purposes. The recognised postgraduate qualification does. Alzantra checks physician qualifications against the current PQR before submission, which is where the expensive mistakes are prevented. Broader requirements sit in our eligibility and registration guide.
Qualification and Experience Requirements for Doctors
Three details cause repeated rejections.
Internship does not count as experience. Your house job year is a qualification requirement, not experience toward the two-year minimum. Candidates who count it apply a year too early.
Experience must be recent and continuous, since an unexplained practice gap can trigger additional requirements or block an application outright.
Experience letters must survive verification. Each needs your exact title, department, full employment dates, duties and verifiable contact details on official letterhead. A generic reference will not pass.
You will also need your degree certificate and transcripts, internship certificate, postgraduate certificates for specialist titles, current medical council registration and a Good Standing Certificate, usually issued within the last six months.
DataFlow Verification for Doctors in UAE
DataFlow carries out Primary Source Verification, contacting your medical college, previous hospitals and home medical council directly rather than accepting your copies.
Start it immediately. It is the biggest time variable in physician licensing, commonly four to eight weeks and longer where institutions are slow or documentation is inconsistent. No authority will progress you to booking until verification is underway.
The recurring causes of delay for doctors:
Name variations across passport, degree, postgraduate certificate and council registration.
Medical colleges with slow or unresponsive verification departments.
Postgraduate qualifications requiring additional evidence.
Hospitals that have restructured or closed, leaving incomplete HR records.
Council registrations renewed under different reference numbers.
Nearly all of it is preventable before submission. Alzantra prepares physician document sets for verification, which is where the avoidable weeks are saved.
Prometric Exam Requirements for Doctors
Once verification clears, your authority issues eligibility and confirms whether an exam is required.
Pass marks vary by title. Around 60 percent is commonly cited for general practitioner and equivalent categories, with higher thresholds for several specialist titles. Confirm the figure for your category from your authority's eligibility message.
Attempts are limited. Most UAE authorities allow three, and DHA counts them across the UAE health authorities rather than resetting per authority. After three, a further set typically requires an additional recognised qualification or roughly two more years of licensed clinical experience.
The blueprint is specialty-specific. A specialist paper tests the declared specialty at depth, a GP paper covers breadth. Studying the wrong blueprint is a wasted eight weeks.
Eligibility expires, so a long delay between approval and booking can force you to repeat steps and fees. Alzantra builds specialty-specific question banks for physician titles across general practice and the major specialties.
How to Book the Prometric Exam for Doctors
Booking is short once eligibility is live. At a high level:
Confirm your eligibility reference is active and within its validity window.
Select your authority and enter that reference.
Choose the category, title and specialty matching your approved title exactly.
Pick a centre, date and slot, then pay and save the confirmation letter.
One authority-specific point: for DHA and MOHAP you book on the Prometric website. For DOH you do not, since a link activates in TAMM after approval and payment, redirecting you to Pearson VUE.
Book four to six weeks ahead, as slots in India, Pakistan, Egypt and the UAE fill quickly. Where booking goes wrong for doctors is specialty mis-selection and name mismatches against the passport. Alzantra can walk you through booking end to end.
How to Prepare for the Prometric Exam for Doctors
Physician preparation rewards precision over volume. You are tested against a published blueprint for one title, not the whole of medicine.
Study to the blueprint for your title and specialty. Weight your hours to the domain percentages rather than your interests.
Work question-first. Start each domain with questions, find what you cannot answer, then read to fill that gap. Reading a textbook cover to cover first wastes most of the time spent on it.
Practise scenario questions specifically. The papers are vignette-driven, so recall-style revision will not prepare you for the "next best step" pattern.
Study to regional guidelines, since UAE papers test guideline-based decision-making, patient safety and professional conduct.
Train your pacing. At roughly seventy seconds per question, if a question is not yielding in ninety seconds, answer, flag and move on.
Never leave a blank. With no negative marking, an unanswered question is a discarded mark.
Track errors by domain and allow eight to twelve weeks alongside clinical duties.
Material quality decides outcomes. Generic banks with wrong keys teach wrong reasoning, which on a limited-attempt exam is worse than no practice. Use specialty-specific question banks and timed mock tests aligned to the authority blueprint. This section should also link internally to the broader Prometric exam preparation guide and profession-specific study resources.
Prometric Exam Day for Doctors
Arrive 30 minutes before your start time. Late arrival generally means no admission and a forfeited fee.
Bring the right ID. An original, valid, non-expired government-issued photo ID with your signature, in English characters, matching your registration exactly, plus your printed confirmation.
Expect security. The centre log, a biometric capture, a photograph and a physical check. Everything goes into a locker, including phone, watch, wallet, notes, food and water.
Take the optional tutorial, which does not consume exam time.
Hold your checkpoints. Be a third through at the one-hour mark, then reserve the last fifteen minutes for flagged questions.
What Happens After Passing the UAE Doctor Licensing Exam
Passing is not the same as holding a licence, and this catches out more doctors than anything else.
Your result appears on the authority portal, generally within a few working days.
The authority reviews your registration application alongside your verification report and issues an eligibility letter or active registration, which carries a validity window.
You secure employment with a licensed facility holding the relevant specialty on its own licence.
Your employer submits the activation request and you consent through the portal.
The licence is issued, typically requiring an employment contract, malpractice insurance and a work permit. Practice may begin only after that.
That third point matters for specialists. A facility can only activate a specialist licence if it is itself licensed for that specialty, which narrows your employer options more than most physicians expect.
Plan for four to six months from first application to active licence. CME requirements begin once licensed, and renewal depends on meeting them. Alzantra supports physicians through registration and activation, not just the exam.
